Happiness

As I stumble down the street
The ground is rumbling
All around me everything is crumbling
People are in dire need of support
Chaos is upon us
But as I go down the street, a man is in distress
He lays on the ground, stunned for a moment
I offer a hand to pick up the fallen
A smile appears on his face
I can’t watch, my past won’t allow me to do so
I need to act
A women is in fear, confusion leaves her paralyzed
Screams burst out as she cries for help
I wipe her tears in order to provide comfort
A smile appears on her face
I ask for nothing in return
No gift of any kind, help is what I offer
But what I receive is a thank you
And a smile appears on my face

What will happen next...

Since there was a telescreen in the room behind the picture this whole time then the Thought Police must know the role that Winston and Julia play as far as being rebellious and trying to join the Brother Hood. They'll probably be tortured to find out if they know anymore information. The Book will most likely be taken by Mr. Charrington and destroyed since all previous books had been. I was shocked to find out that Mr. Charrington was part of the Thought Police, I did not expect that at all. He will probably conduct the interrogations while they rot away in jail. Their cooperation will most likely depend on their fate, whether they are vaporized or sent to a labor camp. If Winston does not cooperate they could use Julia as a way to extract data from him. They could torture her in front of him or say that they are and that it won't stop until he gives up all the information that he knows. I also have a feeling that anyone that he's come into contact with or talked about will be imprisoned such as O'Brien, that is if he hasn't changed his identity already. If he has received word that Winston was captured he might have fled and had the reconstructive surgery done. I have no clue how Winston is going to get out of this mess, his fate is now in the hands of the Thought Police.... We'll have to see how everything ends out!

Genetically Design Children?

As we progress into the future, new topics arise, new inventions are upon us, and new advances in medicine are being discovered. Recently there has been a lot of talk in the news about stem cell research and trying to clone humans. Animals already have been cloned and it is a matter of time before humans can be created by cloning. As research furthers with stem cells, the question arises, should parents be able to genetically design their children? I believe that parents should not be able to do so.

First to start off, there is a positive aspect to genetically designing a child. By doing so you can rid your child of cancer. As in Nancy Gibbs article, "Wanted: Someone to Play God" she talks about how a couple can screen out embryos for cystic fibrosis and cancer risks. Now this sounds like a wonderful idea, birth survival rates would increase, and life expectancy as well. But in a way this takes away from being able to conquer obstacles of life. Many cancer surviving patients can say with confidence that they are stronger as a person after beating cancer. And those that have done so or may have lost the battle, don’t take life for granted. They live everyday to the fullest and enjoy it more than anyone could imagine. The positive aspects of genetically engineering are completely out weighed by the negative aspects though.

If genetically engineering a child becomes legal, no longer will there be uniqueness to the children that are born. Not before long everyone would be looking the same, in a long term way it would create a superior race. No one is going to want a child that people would think less of because of the way they look, so naturally they would want the best they can provide for their child. And to do so, they would engineer their child to look like others, to be accepted into society with as much ease as possible. Conformity though would begin to take over, non-conformity would be an idea of the past. As I see in Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, their society seems perfect on the outside but truly it is not. They are made to believe that they are happy, that life is wonderful. But they are not free, they belong to the community, they can not be themselves. Their lives and everything about them are structured. It is only a matter of time before genetically engineering children turns into creating perfect societies. History shows the attempt of creating so called utopian communities but never can perfection be achieved. As Nancy Gibbs stated, "We are on a road toward reproduction that does not require eggs and sperm at all." Taking away that experience of creating a baby would be devastating, it is a part of life that brings joy to a couple for now they are not just a couple, but a complete family.

Genetically engineering children can take away cancers, thus allowing people to live longer, but life would be taken for granted. Nothing would be appreciated. Positive in a way but also negative. Then you have the idea of conformity taking over, a superior race rising above others. No one would be themselves anymore, uniqueness would be an idea of the past. Possibly you even have the creation of a society where everyone is the same, people would become drones. I believe firmly that parents should not be able to genetically engineer their children.

How life would be without a cell phone

First to start off just think about how much time students would now have. They would no longer be spending hours a night talking on the phone, conversing with their friends, they would actually have to sit down and do homework. This then begins a life of boredom and wastes the night away. Having to sit at a table and actually take part in doing something productive.

Secondly, in class they would actually have to pay attention to what the teacher is trying to teach. No longer would they be text messaging their friend who sits two seats over or the friend that they just saw two minutes earlier. How could anyone possibly go through a forty-five minute lecture and not once send a text message. But would they actually pay attention? Text messaging might just have replaced stirring at the wall or out the window.

Next, people would actually have to learn how to tell time on a analog clock. No longer could you flip your phone out and check to see what hour and minute it is, digitally displayed by the way. Now you have to rely on the old fashion way and look at the minute hand and hour hand. You would actually have to use your brain to count, life would be so much harder.

Just think about it, when you go to the movies people would no longer create their own light show and sound track. And others won’t be yelling to tell that person to close their phone. It would actually be peaceful for once and you would be able to enjoy the movie.

A cell phone happens to have many useful purposes though. Cell phones are now a kind of "all-in-one" device. You can listen to your music, take pictures with the built-in camera, send and receive emails and browse the internet. It seems as if phones now have so much that you wonder if it is still includes its most important feature, the ability to make a call. But it does happen to make life easier because without these features you would have to carry an mp3 player, camera, and a laptop. Plus your phone to make those important calls.

A cell phone does in fact though have significant value. In case of an emergency it provides the capability to call for help. Even though it may seem a nuisance to teachers when their students are text messaging or people get angry at the movies when someone takes their phone out, it may be worth the annoyance. Just knowing that if something were to happen that one time, the cell phone would provide safety.
